Lampo was a famous stray dog in Italy during the 1950s who became an international sensation for his extraordinary intelligence and independence. A German Shepherd mix, Lampo arrived as a stray in 1953 at the Campiglia Marittima train station, where he was adopted by stationmaster Elvio Barlettani, despite strict railway rules against pets.
Lampo quickly learned train schedules, distinguishing between fast and slow trains, and began traveling alone to nearby towns like Piombino, always finding his way back home. He often accompanied the stationmaster’s daughter, Mirna, to school by train — then returned on his own.
