In a bold political move, the Karnataka Cabinet has approved renaming Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar made the announcement, stating the decision was within the framework of law. Ramanagara, around 50 kilometres from Bengaluru, will remain the district headquarters and include taluks like Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli.
When asked about the opposition's claim that development won't come from a name change, Shivakumar replied, “Let them wait and see.” Despite objections from the Centre and protest threats from JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy—who was Chief Minister when Ramanagara was carved out in 2007—the state cabinet is going ahead with the plan. A formal notification will be issued soon, and legal procedures will follow.
