Sailors turn off the engine battery switch shortly after they turn off the engine. This practice isolates the battery, preventing it from being drained by accidental loads (bilge pumps, electronics, etc). This short video show were my engine battery switch was placed even though there was already a switch conveniently located under the steering wheel.
Alf and Ralph were contractors on the TV show Green Acers. They were responsible for putting the telephone on the top of a telephone pole. So up the pole you climb to make a call. Not too dissimilar.
