Farmers in Aska, Ganjam district are gradually moving away from sugarcane cultivation, once the backbone of the region’s sugar industry.
The shift is attributed to:
Delay in fertilizer supply
Lack of government support
Wildlife disturbances affecting crops
As a result, farmers are now focusing on maize and other crops. Earlier, the region used to supply hundreds of tons of sugarcane annually to the Aska sugar industry, but currently, production has declined to just 25–30 tons per year.
Our Aska correspondent Manoj Goud discussed these issues in detail with local farmers, highlighting the challenges facing the once-thriving sugarcane sector.
