Hedgehogs may be small, but they are tough little adventurers. Covered in 5,000–7,000 spines, they curl into a ball for protection and can run, swim, and even climb. Found across Europe, from back gardens to ancient forests, they play a vital role in the ecosystem—keeping food chains healthy and helping control pests like slugs and snails. But their world is becoming more dangerous: roads, fences, habitat loss, wildfires, and climate change are threatening their survival. As our forests shrink and seasons shift, hedgehogs are fighting to find safe places to hibernate and raise their young.

This resource is part of THE HERDS’ dynamic education programme, designed to connect young minds with the wonders of nature and the urgent need for climate action. Covering six diverse habitats, this interactive learning experience takes students on a journey through the world’s ecosystems – exploring the wildlife, challenges, and conservation efforts shaping our planet.

THE HERDS is the 20,000km journey of life-size puppet animals from the Congo Basin to the Arctic Circle. It is created by The Walk Productions, the international team behind "Little Amal," the 12-foot-tall puppet of a refugee child who has journeyed through 17 countries.
