I am sharing how I set up a Home Recycle Center, should anyone wish to create a DIY recycle station such as this of their own. Anyone can do their environmental part by developing their own recycling hacks to have recycling made easy, and I’m here to help by sharing recycle tips, tricks, recycling ideas, and suggestions.😉
Our road to recycling success:
First. Figure out what’s being recycled and how. — Keep in mind, any physical disabilities one may have, time, transportation, and local recycling options, could make this challenging. Find out what services are available in your area and what your curbside collection will accept (if you’re using such a service). Second, how much room and storage space do you have to dedicate to recycling without it becoming an eyesore. And Last, are you or any family members willing to transport items to drop-off locations? There’s a lot out there. There are also specialty removal services to consider that offer home pickups, which may be more convenient, if it fits your budget. In other words, do your research, know what’s expected, and read any fine print carefully and understand BEFORE signing / committing to anything.
Second. Pick a designated area for your recycle center. — I chose an area that didn’t pose an eyesore. Some choose a Screened Porch, Small Room, Closet, Pantry, Mud Room, Garage, Shed, Basement, a lonely Hallway, or a Laundry Room within their home. If you lack space, consider splitting your recycle station(s) between two or more areas based on how often you clean / recycle each item.
Third. Start to use your recycling setup and tweak as necessary. Before investing in fancy plastic bins or anything else permanent you may want, make sure your recycling Center setup actually works for you. Test it out for several months, streamlining as you go, making necessary adjustments to fit your household’s style, using items you may already have, such as Cardboard Boxes, Reusable Grocery Bags, Cloth Bags, Plastic Tubs, Laundry Baskets, etc., and don't forget to label your containers. — For Kids, consider labeling Bins with pictures. For people with Visual Impairments, consider labeling Bins with Braille. For Non-Braille Readers, consider labeling Bins using miniature / smaller items. You could affix a small can to the Cans Bin, a small plastic bottle or jug to the Plastics Bin, a small glass jar to the Glass Bin, and so on and so forth, for tactile sorting. Basically, Keep it super simple. I chose Bins to separate Plastics, Cans & Metals, Paper Goods and Glass.
Fourth. Once everything is all set and seems to be working well, you can then decide whether or not you want to make your recycle center / station permanent or Official, and invest in Fancy Bins, Signs, Seating, Table, Shelf for supplies, Lamp, and more. Remember, there’s no pressure to upgrade your Bins or anything else. — I am still rocking those cardboard boxes (and have purchased bigger, taller ones). LOL. Remember to stay in the know. If recycling rules change with your service, change in your area, or it’s no longer feasible for you to continue to recycle, change your system accordingly. If you feel the need to stop, it’s always okay to Let go of what no longer works for you.
