On September 13th 2020, the first ignition test of the AIS-ePPT1 micro pulsed plasma thruster for nanosats and picosats was run. During the test, successful controlled ignition was achieved for a short period of operation, confirming the potential of the design to move forward on development with.
In this video, controlled and repeated ignition of the thruster can be seen. During the short sequence of firing, only one misfire was observed. While the test was short, with a rocky start at the beginning with igniter arc faults, and ignition reliability issues after with arcing through the 3D printed housing, this test represents a major first step in this new thruster development.
The AIS-ePPT1 represents the latest advance in ultra-low cost, simple, open source electric propulsion systems in development at AIS, and is the newest line of AIS micro pulsed plasma thrusters. At only 45x45x25mm for the smaller version "A", or 45x45x38mm for the larger version "B", with a max power draw of only 1.6W, the ePPT1 is a highly compact and ultra-affordable entry level thruster allowing any academic lab, research group, and nanosat groups the ability to access this technology. Details of the thruster can be found on the project page of the AIS-ePPT1 on the AIS website:
