Paul Keres was an Estonian grandmaster and chess author. He was born on January 7, 1916, and he passed away on June 5, 1975.
From the middle of the 1930s through the middle of the 1960s, he was one of the best players in the world and five times came very close to playing in a World Chess Championship match.
Due to the successive invasions and occupations of Estonia during World War II, Keres was compelled to compete internationally for both Nazi Germany (1941–1944) and the former Soviet Union (1940–1941, 1944–75).
As a result of Keres' victory in the AVRO 1938 chess competition, talks for a title match against Alexander Alekhine, the current World Champion, were pursued; however, the match was never held because of the start of World War II in 1939.
In the years 1953–1962, Keres finished second in the Candidates Tournament four times in a row.
Many chess historians regard Keres as one of the best players in history and the strongest player who never won the world championship because of these and other impressive performances.
The phrase "super grandmaster" is used colloquially to describe the best players in the world, who are typically contenders for the World Championship. Keres fits this definition.
Paul the Second, The Eternal Second, and The Crown Prince of Chess were some of his nick names.
