The Great Gate of Miyajima, Hiroshima Bay, Japan. The Great Shinto Torri is considered to be the boundary between the human and spirit worlds, it is 16.6m high and weighs 60 tons! For those who don't know about Shinto, it is a traditional religion of Japan that focuses on establishing a connection between present-day Japan and its ancient past. Shinto is not a way of explaining the world, the importance is on rituals that enable human beings to communicate with 'kami', or spirits, and these spirits are found within nature and the manifest world. One of the beautiful aspects of the Japanese language is that it does not distinguish between singular and plural, therefore kami also refers to the singular divinity, or sacred essence, that manifests in multiple forms: rocks, trees, rivers, animals, places, and even people. Kami and people are not separate; they exist within the same world and share its interrelated complexity. This is the essence of monistic thinking, non-duality, the one is in the many, and the many is in the one, or as we often say in the world of reggae: oneness. We recorded an instrumental version of a song entitled 'Advanced Peace', if advanced warfare can exist, then so must advanced peace. We all know what happened here in Hiroshima on Monday, August 6, 1945. 'Little Boy' dropped and instantly killed an estimated 80,000 people and by the end of the year, injury and radiation brought the total number of deaths to 90,000–166,000. Ancient knowledge, religious teachings, spirituality, cosmology, anthropology, genealogy are all pointing to the same conclusion - we are one - we are not just connected, we are one, one people, one species, one earth. And I truly believe that if we embrace this simple recognition our spheres of compassion are automatically widened and we're therefore much less likely to cause one another intentional pain and suffering. This is my sincere wish for humanity, it may sound grand but as they say in Shinto: Even the wishes of an ant reach to heaven.
