With the use of AI, what used to take thousands of dollars and months to bring a song to life now takes only a couple of days and almost no money at all. For someone like me—who has songs in every nook and cranny of my house, on tape recordings, on paper, on anything you can imagine, going all the way back to when I was a little child playing piano—this honeymoon phase of AI, where we can still remain in control of the process as artists, allows me to finally bring these songs to life how I’ve always heard them in my head, and dreamed they would sound when I wrote them.

These songs would have died with me. Nobody would have ever heard them. They would have stayed in drawers, in the backs of closets, at the bottoms of dustbins—never coming to life. Now, they can be heard.

This song is called Edenhurst.

Edenhurst Street was my childhood home in Cleveland until I was about ten years old. To me, it has always been this magical, mystical wonderland—a place of utopia, of paradise—where everything felt perfect. It was a place where the creatures from my kindergarten books came to life, where I first met The Beatles, and where I met friends I still think about today, friends I wish I still had contact with. I love them all. I miss them all.

I used to go into our backyard and climb up into the apple tree. About halfway up, there was this special spot—a little shelf and an opening where I could look out over the yard, like my own private fort up in the tree. I would sit there and dream for hours, just getting lost and disappearing into the beauty of the leaves, the shadows, the greens, and the blues of the sky. It was an amazing experience, and I still go back to that place in my mind. It’s a place of peace. The apple tree and I got along really well.

I’ve done a few different renditions of this song over the years in different styles, using the same lyrics, but this is the original version of Edenhurst. This is how it was written. It was written around 2015, when I reconnected with an old friend of mine, Mary Cox, who I grew up with on Edenhurst.

It’s a beautiful place—a special place in my heart—and that’s what this song is about.
