He is after the heart. Pastor Chris walks through the story of Zacchaeus to show what true Christian generosity looks like when a heart is transformed by Jesus.

Zacchaeus is not a harmless character in a children’s song. He is a powerful, corrupt chief tax collector who has grown wealthy by extorting his own people. When Jesus seeks him out and calls him by name, Zacchaeus experiences a complete reorientation of his loves. Jesus becomes his treasure. What follows is not reluctant obedience or rule keeping but joyful generosity. Zacchaeus freely gives half of his wealth to the poor and restores fourfold what he has taken, not to earn salvation but because salvation has already changed his heart.

Pastor Chris explains that giving and generosity are not the same thing. Giving can happen without the heart ever being involved. Generosity flows from regeneration. The New Covenant promise is not external obedience but hearts of flesh that respond in love. Throughout Scripture, including Acts 2 and the early church, generosity marks a people whose hearts are no longer divided. They give freely because Christ is their treasure.

The sermon also addresses common questions about tithing, enjoying money, and whether time can replace financial giving. The New Testament emphasis is not a fixed percentage but cheerful, willing generosity decided in the heart. God loves the worshiper, not the transaction. Pastor Chris closes with a clear invitation for self examination. The question is not how much we give but why we give. God is after our hearts, and when he has them, generosity naturally follows.
