On May 18th 2022 the Revd Dr Peter Howson spoke to the Society for Army Historical Research on the role of members of the RAChD in Germany in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. He considered their role in Op ECLIPSE, their response to the non-fraternisation policy, and their involvement with the Religious Affairs section within the Control Commission Germany (British element).
Speaker Biography
The Revd Dr Peter Howson is the Hon Sec of the SAHR. He served in the RAChD between 1977 and 2002, his final post being that of Principal of the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre at Amport House. He has both an MBA in Church Management (Hull, 2000) and a PhD (University of Aberdeen). In his book, Muddling Through: The Organisation of British Army Chaplaincy in World War One, Peter has described the way in which British churches attempted to meet the spiritual needs of soldiers during that war.
