Weather impacts a private pilot’s flight planning and flying activities in countless ways! Next to the extreme dangerous hazards in thunderstorms, the formation of ice on aircraft, particularly while the aircraft is airborne, presents a serious and dangerous condition. Although icing conditions can sometimes be avoided, understanding the atmospheric conditions favorable to icing, and the skills necessary to properly use anti-icing and de-icing systems is paramount to safe flight. Inflight icing occurs primarily in two forms: structural and the air induction system.
