This timeline follows official country renamings from 1932 to 2022, showing how states changed their names after independence, revolution, decolonization, constitutional reform, national identity shifts and diplomatic disputes.

The story begins with Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ireland, Thailand, Jordan and Egypt, where names were tied to monarchy, native identity, state-building and the end of older political systems. Then the post-colonial wave transforms the map: Ghana, Mali, Somalia, Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini’s earlier Swaziland period, Sri Lanka, Benin, Djibouti, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso and Namibia all show how new names could reject colonial labels and revive local geography, culture or historical memory.

Some changes came from ideological collapse. Cambodia changed names across different regimes. DR Congo replaced Zaire after Mobutu’s fall. Libya dropped Gaddafi’s Jamahiriya title after the 2011 uprising. Others came from diplomacy and disputed usage, including North Macedonia resolving its long-running name dispute with Greece and Türkiye becoming the preferred English form used at the United Nations.

The timeline also includes modern short-name and endonym shifts such as Czechia, Cabo Verde, Timor-Leste and Samoa, where a name change was not only about borders, but about how a country wanted the world to say its name.

This is not just a list of renamed countries. It is the history of how nations use names to break with empires, claim identity, settle disputes, rewrite constitutions, and reshape the way they appear on the world map.
