7. Giant Squids
For many years, humans have known about the strange, almost otherworldly creatures that live below the surface of the ocean. While we all know about squids in the ocean and try to wrap our heads around how large they can get, during early human history people exaggerated and fantasized about their lengths as truly monstrous beings. Nowadays, researchers know of giant squids growing between 60-80 feet long (18-25m) at a maximum depending on species. Now, in ancient times, we didn't know they even existed for real until and unless they washed up on beaches.

6. Oarfish
People have learned this lesson time and again. There are many mysteries within the deeper parts of the ocean that can only be discovered by luck, because there are simply so many fish in the wild and uncharted parts of the world, that we couldn’t possibly map it out and find them all by rigorous searching. One great example of this is the Oarfish. This is a large fish that is the largest "bony fish" alive. In fact, the largest one found was 36 feet (11m) long. The first one ever discovered was washed up on a beach, and it was so unique that many people thought it was a fake to try and scare people.

5. Montauk Monster
On a beach in New York, in 2008, a weird "creature" washed up, and the moment people saw it, they were entranced. Why? Mainly because it was so unique and different from anything they had seen before that it HAD to be a monster. They called it the Montauk Monster to be exact.
Ironically though, before the authorities could get there to examine the body of the creature...it was gone. Someone had somehow taken it without being noticed. Therefore, the only "proof" of the creature was the various pictures that people had taken of it. Not what you were expecting, right?

4. Mermaids
Mermaids are creatures that are half-fish/half-woman in most versions, and they've had a plethora of stories attached to them, especially when it comes to them being spotted by humans in the real world.
Sightings of Mermaids go back to Christopher Columbus and even before him, and continue to appear today. That makes it all the more curious because how can so many people see mermaids without them being real, right?

3. The Giant Seram Monster
In 2017, the people of Seram Island, Indonesia found a very different kind of "monster" washed up on their shores. They called it a "monster" because at the time of its discovery, it was more of a blob of flesh and other materials than it was an identifiable creature. Of course, that’s all the reason people need to label something a monster, and naturally, rumors began to spread about said monster and what it could actually be.
Asrul Tuanakota, a 37-year-old fisherman, initially thought he had discovered a boat stranded in shallow water. On closer inspection, he determined that it was the rotting corpse of a 50-foot-long dead sea creature — possibly a giant squid because the remains looked like tentacles.

2. Muriwai Monster
In 2016, a man was walking down the beach of Muriwai in Auckland, New Zealand when he discovered something that couldn't be explained. So like many before him, he dubbed it a monster.
This was the Muriwai Monster. Scientists came down and took a look to determine what this creature actually was after the story had spread amongst the local people, and they revealed that it was something unexpected: driftwood. Not just a big chunk of wood obviously, no one would call that a monster. But this one was covered in Gooseneck Barnacles, which gave it an otherworldly appearance!

1. The Demon Dolphin of Sakhalin
If you headed to Russia in 2015, specifically to a place known as Sakhalin, you might have been in for a very unique experience in terms of a "monster" that happened to wash upon the beach. It was indeed something special that is still talked about online and beyond.
When the "monster" first arrived some people actually thought they knew what it was. As this mystery creature appeared to have something that resembled a beak, some felt it was a decomposed dolphin. Except, just as many pointed out that dolphins don't have beaks, nor do they have fur as this creature did. Thus, this mystery grew as people tried to decipher the clues to figure out its "true name".
