In Smart Beta index Funds, the number of stocks in the Portfolio is exactly the same as the index it tracks, but the proportion is different.
Let's say a smart beta fund tracks the Nifty50, it will have the same 50 stocks as the Nifty but it can do this, All 50 stocks have a weightage of 2% each, which is different from the weightage in the index.
Due to this, depending on where one is in the cycle, this fund will either go up less, or more compared to the index or when the index falls, it may fall less.
Smart isn't it ?
