Eva Illouz is professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Known for her global sociologies of emotional life, global capitalism, right-wing populism, and nationalism, she is also an essential analyst of contemporary Israeli society, culture, and politics. Her major works, translated into some 23 languages, include Consuming the Romantic Utopia (1997); Cold Intimacies: The Making of Emotional Capitalism (2007); The End of Love: A Sociology of Negative Relations (Oxford University Press, 2018); and most recently The Emotional Life of Populism: How Fear, Disgust, Resentment, and Love Undermine Democracy (2023). In addition to her scholarly work, she writes for Le Monde, Le Nouvel Observateur, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, and Ha’aretz on literature, politics, and social affairs. Some of her many essays on Israeli society have appeared in Israel: Soziologische Essays (2015).
