************************************************************************** The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced measures to ease tight liquidity in the banking system by injecting nearly ₹3 trillion through Open Market Operations (OMOs) and a USD/INR forex swap. ₹2 trillion will be infused via OMOs in four tranches (Dec 29, Jan 5, Jan 12, Jan 22), while a $10 billion three-year forex swap is scheduled for Jan 13.
Open Market Operations involve buying or selling government securities: purchasing securities injects liquidity and supports lending and economic activity, whereas selling securities absorbs excess liquidity and helps control inflation. The move aims to maintain adequate liquidity following RBI’s recent forex interventions that tightened rupee liquidity.
