The Intelligent Bi-stable Structure is a unique concept. It is an adaptive, lightweight, and mechanism-free structural system that is capable of physical transformation. It serves as a basis for new types of movement joint for toys, clothing, and heavy machinery.
The patented invention assembles two or more bi-stable metal strips together with a set of connections. By exerting force on the bi-stable strip, the system 'snaps' and transforms into various end results, giving the user a high degree of control.
The prototype shown here is one of the variants. Instead of a bi-stable strip (slap bracelet), we get an entire bi-stable sheet that can be pressed anywhere along the surface. Each 'snap'will eventually lead to the sheet becoming a full cylinder. This expands the potential uses of bi-stable materials.
