Poco più a nord-est compaiono Aristillus e Autolycus, giovani crateri dal profilo frastagliato e dalle colate di detriti che si irradiano dal centro come cicatrici luminose.
Procedendo nel sorvolo, la visuale si allarga sull’imponente catena degli Appennini lunari, una successione di picchi e dorsali che solleva il bordo del Mare Imbrium come una grande muraglia naturale. La Rima Hadley, celebre per essere stata il sito dell’Apollo 15, si presenta come un sinuoso canyon che serpeggia tra alture e avvallamenti. La sua profondità e la sua geometria sinuosa appaiono ancora più evidenti in prospettiva frontale, conferendo al paesaggio un senso di dinamismo inatteso per un mondo apparentemente immobile.
Man mano che ci si avvicina ai rilievi più elevati, le ombre si allungano e rivelano la verticalità impressionante dei monti della catena apenninica: picchi che raggiungono altitudini tra le più alte della Luna, emergendo come bastioni di roccia testimoni di antiche collisioni cosmiche. Visti da questa prospettiva ravvicinata, i loro profili frastagliati e la brusca caduta dei versanti trasmettono una sensazione di grandezza quasi sovrastante.

Il paesaggio, osservato così da vicino e con un angolo di vista insolito, rivela un equilibrio sorprendente tra ordine e caos, tra forme modellate dalla violenza degli impatti e geometrie scolpite dall’erosione spaziale. È un viaggio breve ma capace di togliere il fiato, dove la tridimensionalità esalta la comprensione e la bellezza di una delle regioni più spettacolari del nostro satellite.

In the virtual flyover offered by the 3D model, the region of the Lunar Apennines unfolds with a majesty that finds few equals on our satellite. In the foreground emerges the large crater Archimedes, with its relatively flat floor and sharply defined walls standing out under the grazing light. Just to the northeast appear Aristillus and Autolycus, young craters with jagged profiles and streams of ejecta radiating from their centers like luminous scars.

Continuing the flyover, the view widens onto the imposing chain of the Lunar Apennines, a succession of peaks and ridges that lifts the edge of Mare Imbrium like a vast natural wall. Rima Hadley, famous for being the landing site of Apollo 15, presents itself as a winding canyon that snakes between hills and depressions. Its depth and sinuous geometry become even more evident from a frontal perspective, giving the landscape an unexpected sense of dynamism in a world that appears so still.

As we approach the highest elevations, the lengthening shadows reveal the impressive verticality of the Apennine peaks—mountains that reach some of the Moon’s greatest heights, rising like rocky bastions shaped by ancient cosmic collisions. Viewed from this close perspective, their jagged outlines and steep slopes convey an almost overwhelming sense of grandeur.

Observed so closely and from such an unusual vantage point, the landscape reveals a surprising balance between order and chaos, between forms sculpted by violent impacts and structures shaped by the slow erosion of space. It is a brief yet breathtaking journey, where three-dimensionality enhances both the understanding and the beauty of one of the most spectacular regions on our satellite.
