Haley is Ellen's daughter, Jo's big sister, and when they die her world falls apart. Dean and Haley find themselves pushing each other away. Haley, because she's grieving so badly she's lost. Part of her needs Dean now more then ever, and part of her is pushing him away out of intense pain. Dean, because he feels so guilty, and blames himself for their death. So when Haley pushes him away he bolts.

Jax, Haley's close friend, tries to put her back together but he can't, because nothing can. The grief she is facing can't be fixed or covered up. Haley ultimately walks away from him too, because she can't handle being with anyone right now, because her life has fallen apart.

It all comes to a head after time passes and Bobby gets shot. And while Dean is initally upset to see Haley again after they had hurt each other so badly, losing Bobby is what really helps to bring them back together. To show them that losing the ones they love most should make them hold on tighter to what they have, to their love, and not rip them apart.
