Two Weeks in New York City // Travel Vlog

For those interested in learning more about our trip, I've collected my thoughts below. It's not an exhaustive review of everything we did... more like general thoughts and feelings that might impact your potential travel plans, particularly if you're coming from Australia like Blake and I.

The first thing I'm going to say is holy mackeral New York is an expensive city. I've been to New York to visit my dad 4 or 5 times prior to this, and to be fair those trips were between 2008 and 2016 - so very different economic and political climates - but still! I was a child with barely any money, no meaningful income, but I would stroll into the sephora in timesquare or Macy's on 5th with all the confidence in the world and come away with a HAUL of goodies... Nothing felt off limits, I would eat out every day with my sister, shop till I dropped... all without a care in the world because at that time, even with the exchange rate, things felt not only more affordable but also better value.

On this trip, Blake and I came into it as a dual income couple on good salaries and even knowing in advance that the tax, tip, and exchange rate were not included in the prices displayed, I was physically ill to discover that the average price of a sandwich and chips and a random corner deli would cost $50 AUD... and that museum entry to the MET cost 90AUD per person.

So yes, keep that in mind - the blog posts about "New York's cheapest eats" or "doing NYC on a budget" are all very dated and I don't think they are applicable any more.

That being said, complaints out of the way now - we still had a great holiday and found a good way to balance those more iconic experiences that cost a bit of money, with other outings that were either free or very affordable.

Something that surprised me on this trip was the amount and quality of green spaces throughout the city. From the piers along the East River in Brooklyn heights, Chelsea Piers, Little Island, the Highline along the Hudson River, Governors Island, Prospect Park, Central Park, not to mention all of the smaller inner-city parks throughout - there was no shortage of opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city and reconnect with Nature.

October was a beautiful time of year to experience all of these sights. I'd only ever been to NY in the dead of winter before which was a totally different experience to this. So yes, I definitely recommend going in October - at the start of our trip it was T-shirt and shorts weather and by the end, jeans and a light jacket or cardigan was all we needed to get by.

Two of the autumn highlights included catching the train to upstate New York (about 2 hours) to Poughkeepsie NY, where we did a bridge walk surrounded by wonderfully coloured autumn "fall" foliage.

The other highlight was getting to experience halloween, American style! They definitely know how to do festivities like Halloween (and Christmas) better than us Australians.
