Robert Schumann - Phantasy in C, op 131
Sophie Rosa, violin,
Ian Buckle, piano
Schumann had been impressed by Joachim’s performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto at the Lower Rhine Music Festival in August 1853. The violinist sent him the score, adding that he hoped that the Beethoven might inspire a new work for ‘the poor violinist, who, outside of chamber music, very much lacks something sublime for his instrument’. Schumann obliged with a Violin Concerto and a Phantasie for violin and orchestra. Joachim premiered the latter in Düsseldorf in October 1853 and kept it in his repertoire for decades; he was less convinced by the Violin Concerto, which was neither published nor performed until the twentieth century.
An 1854 review of Joachim’s performance of the Phantasie in Leipzig in 1854 described it as one of Schumann’s most successful concert pieces, ‘written in a good tone for the public’. It effectively combines virtuosic show with easy melodiousness. Elements of the style hongrois, associated with itinerant folk musicians heard around central Europe, might be detected in the violin’s rhapsodizing – as if the leader of a band, improvising a hallgató-style, fantasia-like introduction - and the dance rhythms of the Allegro. This is probably the first recording of the version for violin and piano, rather than with orchestra, and is based on the Kistner edition of 1853. (Text: Laura Tunbridge)
