Even being an HR professional for years, I see HR jobs scams and didn't realize how many fake recruiters are there to scam each and every one.

I saw several scam positions and applied for an experiment. And here is what happened.

About 14 million people are caught up in employment scams every year, according to the Better Business Bureau who estimated these numbers based on the data from the triple B Scam Tracker, World and Google Survey for the U.S. and Canada.

In 2020 alone, Better Business Bureau reports that fraudsters cost victims an estimated $2 billion.
Work-at-home scams surge during the COVID-19 pandemic as the FBI warns people and especially college students who can become an easy target.

Of course, college students may be too vulnerable because they don’t have any experience working for an employer, and guess what, they don’t know how the hiring process is done with a legitimate company. If you can understand that innocent young college grads are being abused by fake recruiters, it’s not all. In fact, anyone can become a target for a cybercriminal who wants to harm you.

Job seekers of 25-34 ages are the most exposed and susceptible to employment scams, while job seekers of 45-54 and 65+ of age reported the highest median $ loss which is around 16 hundred dollars lost per such a contact. Also, female job seekers report being more exposed to employment scams than their male counterparts, but males are more susceptible and report higher median $ losses to compensate for the gap.

Because it's a lot more prevalent for people to just send their job applications to random jobs they see available where they seem to be a good match with higher-pay promises than their current position offering them, especially sugar-coated by much better benefits packages and employment perks, I really need to say that it’s a huge mistake not researching the employers in as many details as it’s possible.

Scam jobs always and always look Too Good to Be True. If anything seems to be too good and almost unrealistic in terms of pay, career promises, vague corporate perks that you have never heard of- then click out. Don’t send you job applications nor don’t answer those if they contact you.

32% of victims were contacted through Indeed, 7% of victims were in LinkedIn, followed by Facebook, CareerBuilder website, zip recruiter, craigslist, glassdoor, monster, and Upwork.

What is most interesting is that most people who reported they recognized employment scams said they continued to engage with the scammer because it sounded legitimate.

Remember these quick tips before you apply: always check the website and apply through that source. Be wary of work-from-home, shipping/ warehouse opportunities, or secret shopper positions or positions with easy entry barriers like no qualifications required. Watch out for quick responses. It’s not good if the company is calling you the same day or the next day, because statistically, it takes from 25 to 60 days for companies to hire someone.

Also, don’t provide any of your information even if they say they need to run a background check on you before the interview process started. Don’t pay for job applications. Don’t buy any equipment, any software any product if they send you the link to it for you to try it out or install on your computer. Be wary of payment structures. Be wary of vague job descriptions. The tasks are not clear, the job posting looks very unintelligent, very simple, there’s no structure in it. Look at the contact information and google them.
