In the early 1970s Harley-Davidson was still coming to terms with its 1969 merger with American Machine and Foundry (AMF) and new models were scarce. The FX Super Glide debuted in 1971, and was designed to fill the gap between the smaller Sportsters and larger FLs. Penned by design director William G. Davidson, the Super Glide was Harley’s first attempt at a factory-built customized production roadster. The FX line represented Milwaukee’s response to the spreading popularity of customs, cruisers and choppers on the motorcycle scene. Part Electra Gide and part Sportster, the FX combined the FL frame and engine, with a Sportster front end. Harley reasoned there was a market for a production cruiser with a sporting flair; and they were right.
