In todays video, we visit the Jerseyville Cemetery of Freehold. Located in Southern Monmouth County, the Jerseyville cemetery was founded in 1830, and originally served as a family burial ground for the Layton family, which likely owned and farmed the land surrounding it. Sadly, most of the grave markers are weathered, broken or missing, making it nearly impossible to discern the identities of those buried. However, three U.S. Military Veterans are identified as buried at Jerseyville- two Civil War Veterans and One Revolutionary War Veteran of the New Jersey State Militia. Strangely, the two civil war veterans both served with New York Regiments and yet are buried in New Jersey. It was not unheard of for men who lived out-of-state to enlist in other neighboring states regiments in the war, although it is odd. One veteran did not survive the war and died in 1862, and another fought from the commencement in 1861 to the near end of the war in the Spring of 1865.
May all those souls buried on these grounds rest in peace, and may God bless our American Veterans- heroes who are always worth remembering. May posterity never forget their sacrifice.
