Lakers Coach Pat Riley diagrams the "Fist-Up" play that the Lakers ran in the 1980s to isolate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. With Magic Johnson at the point, holding a fist in the air meant that Abdul-Jabbar was going to receive the ball in the post.
In other interviews with Magic and Kareem and Riley, it's been stated that the shot Abdul-Jabbar would take to break Wilt Chamberlain's record on April 5, 1984 would be his signature hook shot, and the assist on the play would come from no one other than Magic Johnson, his teammate for 10 seasons.
The all-time scoring record in the NBA was broken on April 5, 1984 in Utah against the Jazz, when KAJ scored his 31,422nd point: https://www.basketball-reference.com/...
Kareem broke the record for a final time when he scored his final regular season points, giving him a career total of 38,387, on April 23, 1989 in Los Angeles against the Seattle SuperSonics: https://www.basketball-reference.com/...
