India has formally assumed the presidency of BRICS for 2026 at a critical moment in global economic politics. With rising protectionism and tariff pressures under Donald Trump’s trade policies, New Delhi is expected to push for inclusive development, stronger multilateralism, and a greater voice for the Global South in global governance.
During its presidency, India aims to promote reforms in institutions like the WTO, IMF, World Bank, and the UN Security Council, while encouraging dialogue to stabilise global supply chains. Issues such as food and fuel security, debt restructuring, climate finance, and fair trade rules are likely to remain central.
India is also expected to carefully manage debates around de-dollarisation, BRICS expansion, and membership criteria, ensuring that the bloc’s effectiveness is strengthened rather than diluted. As global power rivalries intensify, India’s BRICS presidency seeks to ensure that the voice and concerns of the Global South remain firmly on the global agenda.
