I arranged Exploration for pedal harp duet back in 2018, but since Coraline returned to movie theatres this year for its 15th anniversary, this tune has been on my mind a lot again! I started out by re-arranging my original duet for one pedal and one lever harp, and then I thought, I wonder if I could squeeze everything into one solo version? Well, it definitely has its challenges, but here's the result!

This solo version of Exploration features quite a bit of pedalwork, as enharmonic notes are necessary to fit in all the details of the accompaniment and melody together. Quite a lot of stamping on the E and D pedals, going from flat down to sharp and back again! In the middle section I've also subbed in harmonics to show the countermelody that would have overlapped with the main accompanying part, had it been played normally.

I really enjoyed reimagining my studio's paper flower garden with inspiration from the garden scene in Coraline, and featuring some movie memorabilia, like Coraline's octopus toy, and my button key pendant, which I've collected over the years. And if you've noticed that my left thumb has a plaster on it... well, let's just say I touched some poison oak and I needed to leave some mud on it... not that I foolishly cut my thumb on a breadknife whilst making myself a bagel. Because that definitely never happened.
