Trooper's Summary
On 01/05/2024 at approximately 2030, Sgt. Walker and I were patrolling in the area of Eastern Ave and 44th St after there were several reports of teens in stolen vehicles attempting to break into other vehicles in the area. At that time, I observed a vehicle matching the description of one of the stolen vehicle’s parked at a gas pump at the Speedway on the southeast corner of Eastern Ave and 44th St (4404 Eastern Ave SE). Sgt. Walker and I notified Kent County Dispatch of the vehicles and requested other units respond to the area before making contact. While other units were responding, along with MSP aviation, the suspects entered the vehicles and began driving east on 44th St. Sgt. Walker and I got behind a white Kia Optima bearing registration plate EAT9644. After seeing the license plate, I realized the vehicle was a confirmed stolen vehicle which had been reported earlier in the day. I then activated my emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop as the vehicle was using the turn around to head west on 44th St.
Instead of stopping, the vehicle accelerated, ran the red light at 44th St and Eastern Ave and fled west on 44th St initiating a vehicle pursuit. The driver continued to flee through the cities of Kentwood, Wyoming, and Grand Rapids, disregarding red lights, stop signs, and reaching speeds well over 100mph. The driver eventually stopped in front of Fisk St, exited the vehicle, and fled on foot along with his front seat passenger. Sgt. Walker and I gave chase of both individuals but quickly lost sight of them. MSP Aviation was able to spot both individuals hiding amongst the houses in the area and they were both taken into custody. The driver was identified as , and the front seat passenger was identified as .
made several unsolicited statements during our encounter that he was driving the vehicle and his
cousin, , was the passenger. Both and were lodged at the Kent County Youth home. The stolen vehicle was turned over to the Kentwood Police Department to be returned to the registered owner.
