For the metro, I used my phone with a credit card linked to it. There isn’t a simple metro card available at the stations anymore — most locals use Alipay’s integrated metro QR code, which can be a bit complicated for first-time users. But for tourists, Visa, MasterCard, Amex, etc. are usually enough for getting around the city centre.

For everyday payments, I mainly used Alipay. This worked for Didi taxis, Luckin Coffee, buses, and the metro QR code system. I linked my credit card to Alipay, so I could just show the QR code to the cashier. For those wondering if a credit card is useful for China trip, the answer is NO. Most shop staff don’t even know what credit card is, especially Visa, MasterCard, etc. Only big chains like Starbucks, McDonald’s, or large stores accept them. So it’s better to prepare by setting up Alipay or WeChat Pay.

IMPORTANT : Please wear your seatbelt, even when sitting in the back. I got a warning ticket from the police for not wearing one, and luckily, since it was my first time, there was no penalty.
