Cephalopods are amongst the most intelligent and most deadly of all the marine invertebrate animals. They are part of a large group known as the molluscs, which also includes the more familiar snails and clams. Today, cephalopods such as the octopus, squid and cuttlefish are familiar tentacled denizens of the seas and oceans. Cephalopods actually originally evolved from the monoplacophorans, mollusc-like bottom-dwelling organisms that lived around 539 million years ago during the Cambrian time period. This short film tracks the evolution of shelled cephalopods from the Cambrian until the present.
