South Australia’s Health Minister Stephen Wade has told Sky News his state will “focus first and foremost on opening up our economy within the state borders” before looking at lifting any interstate border restrictions.
South Australia has not had any new cases of COVID-19 for “well over a month” according to the health minister as he lauded the “very low levels of transmission”.
South Australia has had very low virus infections in recent weeks, and has closed its domestic borders, but Mr Wade refused to accept the state was “in a bubble” making it easier to lift domestic restrictions.
“We won’t have a restriction in place a day longer than it’s needed,” he said.
“We could have had a much higher level of restrictions internally and opened up the borders, but that’s not the choice we’ve made.
“We believe that we should continue to ease restrictions within the state, and then look at easing borders.
“It is all about balancing the risk.”
