The Devon Derby - a term used to describe a fixture that consists of the county’s two footballing titans: Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle.
In a recent survey, the Devon derby between the Pilgrims and the Grecians was ranked the second most fierce in England, behind only the South coast clash between Portsmouth and Southampton.
Of course, supporters of any club involved in such intense rivalry would challenge that, but there is no denying that there is more than just an edge – and certainly more than three points up for grabs - when the green part of the Westcountry comes up against the red half of Devon.
Clashes between The Pilgrims and Grecians date back to 1908 when the two clubs first met in a Southern League fixture. Exeter ran out 2-1 winners and followed that up with a 1-0 friendly win on Boxing Day of that year.
The return league fixture ended in a 4-0 win for the Pilgrims, who also beat City 2-0 in an FA Cup clash that same season. Little did anyone know at the time, a rivalry was born that was to grow and grow over the next 110 years and counting…
