Hey, it's Seth with Prudent K9 Training. In this series of videos I will be explaining the training tools I use when working with dogs. I will explain what the tool is, how it works, and most importantly, why I use it. My goal in producing these videos is to give you all a better understanding of my process, so you can better judge if I am the right trainer for you.
This video covers the dominant dog collar; also called the snap-around collar. This collar operates in a similar fashion to the slip lead. The dominant dog collar is intended to sit high on a dog's neck just behind the jaw and when tension is applied to the leash, the pressure restricts the airflow to the dog. This tool de-escalates a dog that can enter a red zone that will put myself and others at risk of being bitten; this includes humans, dogs, cats, and any other animals.
This is not the tool for your average dog that responds well to other tools, such as the martingale collar, prong collar or eCollar. The dominant dog collar is specifically for the dogs with aggression issues that can become dangerous and do not respond well to the other tools we have in our toolkit; possibly even ramping up more when the other tools are applied. The dominant dog collar provides a means to break through a dog's red zone to de-escalate the dog's state of mind and is therefore not required for the majority of dogs we encounter.
Please consider consulting a local dog trainer who can assist you if you are in a situation with a dangerous dog and are looking into using this tool. It is very important to use the dominant dog collar appropriately to keep all involved safe.
