HISTORY ABOUT THE ACCRA SPORTS STADIUM
Inaugurated in 1962, the 40,000-capacity Accra Sports Stadium is Ghana's premier, multi-purpose sporting venue located in the capital. It hosts major football matches, boxing, and concerts, and serves as the home ground for Accra Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics. It was briefly named Ohene Djan Stadium in 2004 before reverting to its original name in 2011.
Key Historical Details:
Establishment: Built and opened around 1961–1962, it was designed as a modern home for football to signify Ghana's post-independence ambition.
Renovations: The stadium has undergone significant upgrades, most notably for the 2000 African Cup of Nations and a major facelift in 2007 for the 2008 tournament.
Renaming Controversy: Renamed "Ohene Djan Stadium" in 2004 to honor Ghana's first Director of Sports, the name was opposed by the local Ga people and was officially reverted to Accra Sports Stadium in 2011.
May 9, 2001 Tragedy: The venue is associated with the darkest day in African sports history, where a stampede, fueled by police firing tear gas during a match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, resulted in 126 deaths.
Iconic Moments: It hosted the 1978 African Cup of Nations final and has been a fortress for Accra Hearts of Oak, including their 2000 CAF Champions League triumph.
The stadium remains a vital national landmark for sports and culture in Ghana.
