In New York, benches with iron bars make lying down impossible, intentionally preventing homeless people from sleeping on them. Subway seats have also been replaced with leaning bars that few use. Remaining benches have barriers to stop lying down, and their width has been reduced to fit only sitting. These measures are criticized for being harsh and making public spaces less welcoming.
