This was an ambicious mission. I had just finished a downwind trip from Cumbuco to Barra Grande with some friends from Portugal. I had a flight from Fortaleza 4 days later. I wanted to try to go say good bye to my fishermen friends in Ilha Mutante - a sandbank halfway through the delta of Rio Parnaíba.
I tried to lure some of my friends to join me in this "expedition", but nobody joined. I had successfully completed this passage alone in the past. And I had done it 2 weeks before with my friend Kiko. The forecast was too light for my 9sqm (my largest kite) and forecast to get weaker. There are no restaurants, or inns or villages in this passage. One must go autonomous.
I decided to give it a shot anyway. I knew that I could always bail out in Pedra do Sal, the last possible call before crossing the Parnaíba river to enter the State of Maranhão and the delta.
I took off and after the first hour the wind was already dying... After sinking some times due to lack of wind, I made my way to the beginning of the bay of Pedra do Sal. I tried going across the bay, sunk another couple of times and good seamanship called it off. I got back to Pedra do Sal, packed my gear, found a restaurant and while eating I messaged my friend Marques to give him an update on my plans. I had to retrieve the gear that I had left in Barra Grande and make my way towards Fortalezas.
Marques called back: «Bro, Sténio and I are on our way to Pedra do Sal. We are coming with 2 foilboard and 2 12sqm kites. We kept secret, but were going to launch from Pedra do Sal to make you a surprise, joining you mid-way in the delta or ot Ilha Mutante!»
They were driving 3.5 hours, one way, to make me a surprise!... I could not let them down. So we planed to carry on together.
We left together in front of Márcio’s “Chalé pôr do Sol”, exited Pedra do Sal bay and crossed Parnaíba River. Entering the State of Maranhão and the river delta. About 1h later, Marques lost his hydrofoil stabiliser. Sténio disassembled that hydrofoil and tried to ride that board, without fins nor foil. And then, Marques kite fell in the surf break and was torn big time.

When we got stranded in the island I only had 3 days left to get out of that isolated island, retrieve the luggage that I had left in Barra Grande and get to Fortaleza airport, 500Km away from there…
