The "House Underground" in Baxterley, North Warwickshire, is a historic structure with a partially subterranean design. This stone edifice features two entrance arches and is built into a mound, giving it an underground appearance. Its exact original purpose remains a topic of debate among historians and locals.

Historical Interpretations:

Sandstone Mine: Some sources suggest that the structure served as a sandstone mine during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Evidence supporting this includes the identification of four adits (horizontal passages) and remnants of a steam-powered winding mechanism. It's also posited that one of these adits might have connected to the Spirorbis Limestone layer located a few meters below.

Smokehouse: Another theory proposes that the building functioned as a smokehouse for curing meat. This hypothesis is based on the architectural features of the structure, which align with traditional smokehouse designs.

Ice House: Additionally, there's speculation that the edifice might have been an ice house associated with Old Hall Farm in Baxterley. Descriptions highlight two brick archways leading to interconnected chambers, possibly used for ice storage and as a larder. The mound covering the structure, now supporting mature trees, aligns with typical ice house constructions of that era.
