The speakers review advances in closed-loop neurostimulation, where brain biomarkers guide stimulation based on memory states. In a $24 million DARPA study with neurosurgical patients, targeting the lateral temporal cortex (LTC) improved recall by 15–20%, sometimes up to 40%, outperforming hippocampal stimulation. LTC stimulation acts as a “hot spot,” shifting the brain from a poor to a good memory state by influencing network connectivity, partly through its link with the hippocampus.
