Regarded as the first battle of the Wars of the Roses. This particular confrontation was not a battle for the crown, because at that time York remained loyal to Henry VI and his only intention was to remove his advisor, Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset.
It was therefore not a direct challenge to Henry VI, but a battle for who would be the king’s chief advisor.
