Helena’s research focuses on understanding the mechanisms behind MND more fully and researching new potential therapies. This uses both cellular models and animal models of MND to achieve a more complete understanding of the MND therapeutic mechanisms.
Some of her research has looked at using terazosin to target phosphoglycerate kinase 1 (PGK1) - an important enzyme that adds a phosphate molecule - to improve motor neuron health.
Helena has been a senior postdoctoral fellow at the University of Edinburgh since 2017, after achieving her PhD in 2016 at the Royal Holloway University of London.
