J S Bach is an inspiration for all classical organists, and wrote a huge repertoire for the instrument. This is the final piece in Bach's Clavier-Übung III is the second part of his monumental Prelude and Fugue in E flat. It is sometimes known in England as the "St Anne" Fugue, because of the similarity of the initial fugue subject to the hymn tune, St Anne, used for "O God, our help in ages past". It is also sometimes known as the "Trinity" fugue, because it is a triple fugue, in three interlinked sections, written in the key of E flat major, which has three flats. Number symbolism was an important part of many of Bach's compositions, and this theory is entirely possible, hence the release of this recording on Trinity Sunday 2023.
Timothy Judd expands upon this Trinitarian symbolism: "The Clavier-Übung III is filled with references to Christian numerology, especially to the Trinity. The Prelude, set in a key with three flats, is made up of three themes. The first, containing the majestic dotted rhythms of a French overture, may represent the Father. The second theme, representing the Son, is quieter with a graceful galant statement, followed by an echo. This section has been compared to an Italian concerto. The final theme, representing the Holy Ghost, is filled with fugal counterpoint with rapidly moving eighth notes “descending, flickering like tongues of fire.” As the Prelude unfolds, the themes overlap, suggesting a cosmic sense of unity." It was recorded on a Johannus AGO Live III on the sample of the Silbermann organ in the Katholische Hofkirche Dresden. Samples have four positions, Console, Front, Centre, or Rear of church. This was recorded using the Rear sample.
