The Department of Health and Human Services is defending a decision to continue holding a passenger from the cruise ship hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak in a federal quarantine unit in Nebraska.
An HHS spokeswoman says Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is refusing to let Angela Perryman finish her 42-day quarantine at home because the state of Florida will not post a guard outside her home 24/7. Noting that the virus has a 40% fatality rate, HHS spokeswoman Courtney Spencer added that the decision is necessary to ensure both Perryman’s and her community’s “well-being.”
Florida, most independent public health experts and even an internal reviewer at the CDC says a guard is unnecessary.
