A soulful Folk/Americana ballad: Flight of the Red Diamond.
• The Parable of the Kite | ComeUntoChrist.org
A nostalgic and philosophical reflection on a childhood memory and an earlier poem. This song explores the paradoxical truth that true freedom isn't found in being untethered, but in the strength of the anchor that holds us.
🪁 Freedom in the Bounds | Folk/Americana Storyteller | 70s Singer-Songwriter Vibes 🎼 Music & Sound | Warm acoustic guitar, harmonica, and piano / Reminiscent of Jim Croce or James Taylor ✍️ The Story | Learning through a "Red Diamond" kite that liberty requires a steady hand.
The lyrics were inspired by a retrospective look at a poem written about a day kite flying in the front yard; it captures the moment a kite is let go, only to realize that without the string, it can no longer fly.
This is a contemplative, storyteller classic that channels the steady, grounded energy of traditional American folk music.

[LYRICS]
[Verse 1]
I was ten years old beneath an old olive tree,
on cool dichondra grass where the wild wind was free.
My Red Diamond flew a hundred feet or more,
and I wished I had its freedom, that's what I was wishing for.
I watched it climb and dance against the evening haze,
and thought of all the wild, untethered ways.
[Verse 2]
The third bolt of string stretched a thousand feet or higher,
I felt the line pulled taut—a tiny diamond of fire.
It sent a signal down, soft as a whispered word:
"Let me go — Let me be. — I wanna follow that bird."
I opened my hands, watched the string slip away and smiled,
But the kite only fluttered for a breathless little while.
[Chorus]
Oh, the kite only flies when the string’s held fast,
it needs the anchor built to make the current last.
Without a grounded root, it's just a scrap of cloth and sticks,
spinning down to earth, too broken to fix.
The sky is held by earth, and freedom lives in bounds;
true liberty is only where rules are found.
[Musical Bridge - Harmonica solo with piano backing]
[Verse 3]
I thought of that kid at school, the one who always fought,
whose stringless flight led to trouble, lessons wrongly taught.
His parents let him loose, no line, no steady hand,
He thought that was freedom, running through the broken land.
He was a kite cut loose, a beautiful, fragile thing,
that just tumbled out of the sky, when they let go of the string.
[Chorus]
Oh, the kite only flies when the string’s held fast,
it needs the anchor built to make the current last.
Without a grounded root, it's just a scrap of cloth and sticks,
spinning down to earth, too broken to fix.
The sky is held by earth, and freedom lives in bounds;
true liberty is only where rules are found.
[Outro]
Well, I sat back down, and thought of all I saw,
and I'm grateful for the love that keeps the steady law.
The anchor holds me tight, so I can climb up high,
Yeah, I'm just a grounded kite, grateful that I can fly.
[Fade out - Soft spoken]
(May the good Lord hold me tight so I can fly)
