In 2018, the organization responsible for maintaining video game high score records, Twin Galaxies, conducted an investigation into Mitchell's Donkey Kong scores and concluded that he had used an emulator, rather than an original arcade machine, to achieve his high scores. Emulators can allow players to manipulate the game in ways that are not possible on original arcade machines, giving them an unfair advantage.

Furthermore, it was also discovered that the video evidence that Mitchell had submitted to Twin Galaxies had been edited, which was a violation of their rules. As a result, Twin Galaxies stripped Mitchell of his Donkey Kong high scores and banned him from submitting any further scores.

While Mitchell has denied any wrongdoing and has continued to defend his scores, his reputation as a top video game player has been tarnished. His case is often cited as an example of the importance of maintaining integrity in competitive gaming and the need for strict rules and regulations to prevent cheating.
