I discovered I have been treating stovepipe stoppages on the AR platform with a method that I have trained for years under range conditions which have not been effective under real world circumstances. This was eye-opening for me and I researched the problem as a shooter and an armorer.
Properly working AR series rifles with quality ammunition rarely incur stoppages which means most of the time they are not a consideration. Firearms trainers teach to setup stoppages to train people to clear them in the event they are incurred. Two common methods of setting up stovepipe stoppages for training are remedied by Tap, Rack, and Asses. However true organic stoppages require a different correction.
I have had great conversations with firearms instructors and people involved in the firearms community about this matter. Bennie Cooley, Barry Dueck, Keith Garcia, Bill Rogers and Jason Speller-DRAW School offered a lot of advice on the topic. Keith Garcia and I practiced several techniques for weeks to determine the most effective and fastest way to get the AR back into action from a stovepipe stoppage. Wil Petty of Centrifuge Training was also very helpful and anyone viewing this should check out his rifle injured shooter video where he utilizes a very similar technique. Thanks to Chad Timney and Eldon Eardhardt for also practicing this technique and giving feedback. Phil Burt filmed and edited the video.
I have been a firearms instructor for both military and law enforcement for over 25 years. I actively compete in both USPSA and Multi-gun competition. I have earned both the USMC Distinguished Rifleman and Pistol Shot badges.
