I’m Kirstye Todd and I am a Dispensary Manager at Canterbury Medical Practice.
What is your career journey?
I started my NHS journey in 1997 when I worked on a Brain Injury Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Folkestone, as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA). I was always interested in the medicine side of the role and continued to pursue this route. Eventually, I became a Dispensary Manager for a large practice in Norfolk. I trained as Pharmacy Technician and after qualifying, I was offered the role of Medicines Lead for Norfolk 111. In 2017, I began working as a tutor for Dispex, providing training for dispensing practices in England and Wales. In 2019, I moved to Kent and took the role of Flagship Pharmacy Manager, managing 3 large pharmacy departments. Six months ago I moved back to dispensing practice in Primary Care, also writing training courses for dispensing practices across the UK.
What motivated you to work in Primary Care?
I think the opportunities for development, job security and the variety of roles available motivated me. I have always wanted to look after people and I am passionate about making people feel better in their most difficult times.
What does your role entail?
I am responsible for providing a safe and effective service to the patients at the surgery, such as dispensing medication, arranging deliveries, dealing with face to face and telephone enquiries in relation to their medication. On a daily basis I speak to wholesaler and medicine suppliers, hospitals, dentists and our own clinical teams regarding patient medicine and queries.
How does your role benefit the practice and patients?
We are often a buffer between the clinical teams and the patient, we save clinicians' time and valuable appointment time by often resolving queries directly with patients.
What are your career plans in the next 2-3 years?
I am planning to retake my pharmacy technician qualification for GPHC qualification and I hope to continue to provide training for the Primary Care workforce. In the future, I would like to train to become a CQC Inspector.
