If your MG is running too hot, performance will suffer. As long as there's coolant in the system, major damage won't happen based on temperature alone. An infrared pyrometer can check the accuracy of your temperature gauge when you aim it at the temperature transmitting unit. If your temperature is reading consistently high (over 195 degrees), the gauge or sending unit might be faulty.
To lower the temperature, make sure the cooling fan is positioned close to the radiator, but not touching. An aluminum radiator dissipates heat better than brass one, but it's not original. Use a 50/50 mix of coolant and water. MGAs have different types of radiator grills and some are more effective than others at letting air into the engine. For 1945-1980 MGs, check that the timing is set to 32 degrees at full mechanical advance, vacuum disconnected.
