In an education landscape where online and remote learning has increased student opportunities to cheat, Kane considers how greater attention on misconduct, and particularly contract cheating, does not necessarily mean institutions are equipped to surface signs of student cheating and pursue the required investigative process.

Kane outlines the academic integrity model in place at Macquarie University, comprising a partnership that removes silos between academics and professional services staff - the latter of which describes his own role. Pairing academics’ unparalleled knowledge on pedagogy and their students’ needs with the investigative and regulatory skills held by professional services staff, Kane shares how this collaborative approach can overcome educators’ uncertainty and discomfort in reporting suspected cheating and aid accuracy and efficiency.

Introducing a pyramid concept for classifying student involvement in contract cheating and the associated risk factors, Kane emphasises the importance of assessment security measures in placing downward pressure to stop cheating and to offset any contagion of academic dishonesty amongst the student cohort.
